South Africa being a dangerous place I've carried a knife since I was a kid. (I teach tactical knife fighting). On the street, the guys with the big knifes are not dangerous. The "pro" knife fighters carry small knifes, razor sharp, well concealed. In a fight, an amateur knife fighter pulls a big knife and makes a series of verbal threats. The professional doesn't say a word and tries to avoid the confrontation. If not, the small knife comes out so fast and it's all over in a second. As for knives, Spiderco is good. Kershaw has some good stuff too. As for a working knife, I'd say that it's a matter of personal choice, but make sure to carry the knife in such a way that you don't get injured by it in case you fell. You'd be amazed how easily you can get injured by your own knife. I used to carry a small Japanese Tanto. It could pierce a bullet proof jacket that can stop a 9mm bullet, and a car door, no sweat. Due to law in Japan, I can't carry one since knifes are illegal.

Gday Ive always carried my leatherman since I was a first year hort apprentice. That was 11 years ago and now that I'm learning to climb it stays on my person there too. Its amazing how handy the little bugger is, cutting ropes, undoing small screws for hand saws, fixing wiring on the chipper, etc. After a talk with my leading hand one day he also carries a small climbing knife, just in case he has to cut some rope on a rescue or something. Although it would never be used as a weapon as stated by others and the law, thats what learning to protect ones self with martial arts is for, I wouldnt be without my leatherman. Cheers Leayton |

| That's true Rob. Where I come from we rever to it as a knife since it's pretty short, but in Japanese "tanto" means short sword. Right on man!
