That kind of stuff happens in here in the inner city and recently in the suburbs almost every day. A couple of days ago a woman was shot in the neck when 2 drug dealers got into a shoot out. The witnesses won't testify for fear of retaliation. The judge even put one in jail for refusing to testify. One inner city town in Cinci. was named the most dangerous place to be in in the nation. Never used to be that way before the riot. It is so crazy here that some moron/s is/are throwing large rocks and bricks over overpasses into traffic below hitting cars on the highway. One woman had her face completely crushed and is hanging on to her life. Probably won't want to live when she sees her reconstructed face if they put it back together. White on black crimes are hate crimes but black on white crimes are.....usually just a revolving door in and out of the jail that will not hold anymore. After someone is beaten raped or murdered it is often a story in the local rag about how terrible a childhood the perpetrator had. These kids have no fathers and their idols are all gangstas. We have what is called "Section 8" housing which means that money is given to "people" who "qualify" for housing. It used to be that they could only use it in certain housing areas but now, for example, a previously exclusive luxury apartment complex near my equipment lot has gone section 8. There is gunfire at night and the surrounding neighborhoods, previously well kept working families are riddled with robberies. A few days ago, a guy set up a grill outside the gated exclusive complex and was selling hot dogs and hamburgers with a hand made sign likely to pay the balance of his rent before a cop ran him off. It would be funny if it was not so sad. All the surrounding business have had robberies. Eventually the good people are chases out and this, I suppose is how a ghetto is formed. |

Here in QLD, Brisbane anyway, the housing commission realise that creating entire streets and suburbs of hard done by people is not good. Now they buy properties here and there so the tenants are mixed in with normal communities. Down side is that even plush apartments have the odd unit bought by housing commission, next you know you just $600K for a river view unit and have some ferals next door paying $100/week rent. This is a relatively new way and lots of the old suburbs and complexes still exist. With the houses they have been renovating them and selling them off slowly. I can see the merit of the idea. They also try to help the tenant buy the place with incentives and paying more but getting some ownership, if tenants build some sort of equity they might care a little more. Overall I have seen the worst in this town, I was a debt collector, tough guys, bad neighbourhoods etc and at no point ever did I fear of a shooting or gun getting pulled out, never ever. The worst debtors are fat ugly feral white trash women!

Same as far as carrying firearms. *I* am not in the demographic of those who cause most of the crime and violence. But that doesnt mean I shouldnt reasonably be allowed to protect myself against it. Letting off a barrage of rounds is one thing, but using practiced skill to depart a few shots with good placement is another entirely. I get the feeling that if some of you came home to find your wife being raped, you'd stand by and watch.

Thank GOD I dont live in AUS.... You folks are goofy. THIS THREAD WAS MEANT FOR "DO YOU CARRY A KNIFE WHILE PERFORMING TREE CARE WORK I hadnt intended it to become a discussion on CCW's, firearms, violence, murder, stabbings, molestation, rape, carrying catapults in public, throwing rocks at people, stealing military tanks and bashing communications towers, hot-wiring steam rollers, or the effects of water saturation on human corpses. Could we get it back to the subject? |

Yes they are ok but not really good for trees, just too big to take up and doesnt have a letting groove on the sides which takes out other uses too but it looks good. if you want a good knife that looks good and practical try https://www.kabar.com/famous.jsp but again not really good for tree climbing.

I was in an Army surplus store today, man they had a great selection of really good knives. The top shelf ones were stunners, bloke reckons Spanish made top class stainless steel. I can see how you get hooked on them. Anyway, there was this really bizaar knife, on one end it had about a 6" long tapered steel pointer thing that had a slight bend in it. After watching movies like Men in Black where an alien roach stabs a guy in the neck I said, "oh, that must be used for jugular stabs and vampire work." ![]() Nope, dude was a knife expert, he said sailors and boaties like these coz you use that thing to undo tight knots! Bugger me, there you go and it would be ideal for it too, better than a screw driver I'm sure. It was $30 and I didn't buy it, figured it wasn't much chop on vampires.

![]() Two teens charged over fatal shoot-out - Yahoo!7 News More than a month after a shootout in a Sydney car park in which an innocent passing truck driver was killed, two teenagers have been charged. Shooting broke out in the car park of a KFC fast-food outlet at Milperra in Sydney's southwest on June 25 as Bob Knight was driving past in his semi-trailer. Mr Knight, 66, from Macgregor in the ACT, was struck by a stray bullet in the head as he drove along Milperra Road. He died in the truck as the TNT rig rolled 200m down the road.

I have a serrated SS Spyderco state police model lock blade that is attached to the inside of the small gear bag on my belt with a military boot lace as a lanyard coiled around it for storage. The lanyard makes sure I always have it on me in the tree. Straw |

Treekiwi, Nice looking blade there. I'm always skeptical when something's advertised as "intimidating" though. LoL, you should be able to tell that from looking at it without them having to use it as a selling point. And galbee's right, without a letting groove, you wouldnt wanna get it stuck in...something soft and squishy with hard stuff mixed in. A letting groove allows it to break suction and suck back out easier. Then again, if you're just using it to cut rope, it's all good =) I was looking at knives on Gunbroker tonight but then I got sidetracked looking at the FN ps90 assault rifle. Started drooling, thought I might have to change my pj's. That thing is gorgeous. Beautifull styling, comfy, high cyclic rate, can hold 50rnd mags, accurate grouped shots when used in bursts. Good for room clearing in close quarters use. Ugh... I'm pretty sure I need one for some reason. Only about $1500 too. Heck, that's what credit cards are for right?? ![]() It's my weapon of choice in an online FPS game I play. Absolutely deadly in corridor battles. You can take out an entire hallway full of enemies before needing to swap mags. What more can you ask for? It's even ambidexterous. |

The ps90 is only $1670 get saving or put it on your christmas list for santa, or really annoy the security forces and you could end up with a room full of them (probably aimed at you) but hey if you want one so bad.

living in the "beautiful" city miami i have developed a habit of keeping a spring loaded (switch blades are illegal but "assited opening" is ok) knife clipped in my pocket. it naturally comes into trees with me but i've had no need to use it yet. i have, however had a few (more than three) occasions where i've needed it in my daily commute to protect myself. i'm a slight guy (6' 145lb) and tend to walk alone which hasn't been safe to do since the eighties (being white and all). one time when i left it at home only to get robbed and end up needing stitches in my left arm and chest from a broken beer bottle the idiot tried to use to rob me. i've checked for it religiously before leaving my house since then. it's sad that the world has gotten to the point where a weapon and your own wits are the only thing that you can count on to keep you safe. when i was robbed a police officer was litterally a block away and there must have been at least ten people who just stood and watched as i fought to get the bottle out of the bastards hand. one was yelling "Kill that cracker!" and when i got the bottle and was wrestling to hold the man with my bloodied hand someone accused me of stabbing him with it. the police showed up when they yelled "that white boy just stabbed that nigga!" the officer was no help either. i was a white kid in a black neighborhood so they assumed i was doing a drug deal and it went bad. but to answer the question origionally posted, yes, all the time.

I carry a Swiss Army Knife and have had since I was little. Dont go anywhere without it. Too big for my pocket when I'm climbing, gets under my leg straps. So it goes in my bag when I climb. Easier to get to that way also. Can cut rope easily and pull splinters with the tweasers. Even has a small saw that is about three inches long. Can cut one inch limbs pretty easy.

It is called a marlin spike, and it is the other half of the pocket knife I always carry. And before 9-11 I could even take it on the plane with me, it wasn't considered a dangerous weapon, but not many could identify it, It is quite useful for doing splices on lay rope, and sometimes with tight knots.

I have one of these, a gerber rescue knife - can't stab anything with it, especially me. The clip holds it under the webbing on the side of my harness, never know it's there. Weighs nothing, cuts rope cleanly and quickly. Bought it after having my wrist pinned under the lowering rope. Many lessons learned that day. Last edited by Jeff Darby; 31st January 2012 at 08:49 AM.
