Since I'm having to buy a lot of new gear it's reminded me of an earlier time in my life. When I was 19 I got my PADI certification for scuba and was looking for a bargain on some diving gear. Wanting to save money I was willing to get something "slightly used" and ran across the deal of a life time. A friend of a friend lost her husband in a cave diving accident and was willing to get rid of what he had for very little, I ended up giving her $50.00 for everything from a full wet suit to 80cf tank w/ an octopus rig. It was less than a year old, used very little and saved me close to $1,000. So here I am again... would you buy a dead mans climbing rig if it was SLIGHTLY used???

I can understand what you mean about the scuba gear... kinda spooky how it happened, but it's perfectly good stuff I'm Divemaster cert'd, used to work at a Dive shop... you got a good deal!!! As far as the climbing gear... As long as it passes a thorough examination, I'd think it should be just fine. Not knowing the history of the biners and such I'd give them a really good going over. Might personally just use them for rigging and still pick up my own biners for personal safety. Don't see any problems with using the harness/spikes/etc though. What all gear is included and how did he pass on??

I was thinking about this the other day. I seen a rope and grillon on ebay ive never been on it before and emailed the person to ask what they wanted for it as they only lived 12 miles away. I didnt get a reply and when i seen what thy went for it made me think a) I wouldnt pay that for second hand gear and b) would i want to climb with it not knowing the true history of it. It wasnt for me anyway it was just a thought for a friend who is getting trained up.Years ago I used to use others gear, as therrin said spikes and harness is probably o.k but i wouldnt buy second hand gear that i didnt know the past of. And if sombody died in it no f*?king way in this world would I be anywere near it.

I'm slightly allergic to used climbing gear. Buy new gear, I allways say. Don't go cheap when it comes to tools whom are meant as a primary support of life itself. Keep in mind that for instance 1 small drop of sulphuric acid is not visible in any way on a climbing line, but it can reduce the load ratio to about 5 percent of the normal MBS. Pretty heavy stuff for gear that you will have to trust. just my 2 cents... or the gear could be jinxed.... ![]()
