Default Chainsaw Lanyard

I have a break-away chain saw lanyard for my Stihl T020 saw. The problem is that when you attempt to wrap the loop around the handle the lanyard takes up too much of the handle grip due to the air filter design of the saw. That leaves option B for attachment, using the metal wire loop on the back of the chainsaw. Does anyone else use this loop for lanyard attachment? I'm concerned about the strength of this attachment point although I believe that it's designed by Stihl for that purpose.

The ring is desgined as lanyard attachmentpoint. And it's designed with German "grundlichkeit" so don't worry it will hold.

I figured that it would be fine but it doesn't look all that strong and I just wanted to be sure. Gut. Danke.

Yeah mate. I have a couple of 020's and both have lanyards (coiled type), attached to the proper clip. I have dropped the saw many times and had no issue with the fixings. I have, on the other hand, replaced a couple of lanyards, usually from cutting on the ground with lanyard attached....

Never seen the attachment point fail, usually a nicked up strop, undone biner or non-visual attachment or dumba55 climber the cause of a fallen saw!

I thought the design of the Stihl attachment point was so it auto broke away at a high force negating the need for these tear aways.

I have a bungee lanyard, but it's not tear away.

Clip the biner of the lanyard into your pocket when using saw on the ground helps stop cutting the lanyard, I drum it into everyone coz at around $70 a bungee lanyard DO NOT CUT THEM.

Is the little ring on the back of the saw called a breakaway?

I still tie the lanyard to the saw handle...but if I cut a piece that's sizeable, I always unclip the saw from my saddle, little ring or not.

worst (only) accident I ever had I was cuttin' big ginkos on the weekend.

Cut a 150lb. chunk...and the saw got stuck in the kerf...duh.

Pulled me right off my stance , still got the saw!

Check out the pic.

That's an Echo saw.

But mate, it's beat up bad.

On the 200T I bet it will break away but at maybe 200kg+ of force. Dont hold me to this, I have no 100% rock solid evidence but "heard it" around the traps. Also looking at the engineering of it, the ring will pull out.

I have on the odd "suss" occasion unclipped the larger saws myself in case they go but they always come out unless you do some weirdo multi level slotted back cut.

I had my 200t clipped in with the "breakaway clip" when is got stuck in a spear cut. the clip didnt break, it just ripped the whole back of the saw off. - its actually mounted to the fuel tank so i needed a whole new fuel tank + heaps more - over $700 to replace. ;-(

Sorry I can't help myself, for some reason I laughed at that last bit... As shocking as it is...

Hmm, dam clip didn't break and that biner picture in that other thread... I've got a feeling you have some great stories on gear failure.

Where abouts in Sydney are ya?

the attachment point is strong but keep an eye on it. take the lanyard off from time to time and check it snaps back into place if it flops about its time to change it

I used to have a non-breakaway chainsaw lanyard, big 'ol fat 13 mm bungee inside it. Wonderful part of the saddle setup, last about 6 years.

I did what Ekka occasionally does, and that is, if there's a chance of a saw snatcher, take the saw off lanyard.

I retired the lanyard after touching it with a saw. Dang nabbit. Temporarily, I replaced the lanyard with a length of loop webbing + biner. Like many, you get used to using substandard crap gear and just get along with it. That's what I'm doing at the moment. Embarrassingly, I know the difference. I went from non-tearaway and awesome to non-tearaway and sucketh.
