So I'm thinking about creating a basic rigging kit and pricing it up, possibly buy one later in the year from apprenticeship bonuses. What I'm looking at is what size blocks, ropes, port-a-wraps, etc I should be looking for. Basic kit like: Block (DMM one looks hot) Whoopie/loopie sling Port-a-wrap Rope (maybe) Carabiners/other smaller gear for rigging. I don't see myself rigging to much but when I do I would prefer to have my own kit, seen too many bad improvisations @ rigging gear to go without it. |

For a block, DMM Small ($299) is sexy but x'y, strong as though, you will have it forever. A cheaper alt is the CMI block ($199), still very good. Blocks really come ito there own when shockloading, for most of your rigging done from above the piece, a good pully is ok, and the new DMM Pinto Rig ($89) is sweet, rated to 50KN, and can be configured all sorts of ways. Like we have just made up a retrievable rigging rope guide with one. ![]() Loopies are twice as strong as whoopies. Portys are capable & good value, this tree was done with a porty! Winch is being repaired at the moment.... Rope, Donaghys Rhino is good value. Carabiners, Kong 50kn autolock or Omega Pacific 72kn screwlock. Happy to help you put something together that is the right kit at the right price. Last edited by Jeff Darby; 26th February 2011 at 07:25 PM. Reason: thread linked to same pictures on our server |

Thanks for that info. Will have a better look after work tomorrow. Basic rigging kit is really the only thing I haven't got now. Saw on Wesspur a 'Stein' lowering block, the video presentation looked pretty good. Although the small version only takes 1t and 14mm rope and the big one 2t and 16mm rope. Stein Lowering Devices Would the DMM Pinto Rig handle blocks 18"ish diametre 3-6ft long? Last edited by Eric Frei; 26th February 2011 at 06:48 PM. Reason: changed link |

So then atm I'm looking at: DMM Pinto Rig pulley - how about the shock load from something that size? Stein lowering device (looks like a better option to a port-a-wrap, will have to research it a bit more tho) + the bits to attach it to the trunk Loopie - what size loopie should I be looking at? I can't see myself rigging down Mountain Ash so it doesn't need to be overly long. Karabiner - I personally prefer to have an auto lock, although the impact from hitting the trunk/ground could be damaging to the mechanism. Is screw lock the preferred karabiner for rigging? Rope - what sort of length am I looking at? 40ish metres? Looking to buy probably some time after easter but before tax time so I'm trying to sus out everything in good detail before jumping in for another big spend on gear. |

If you're talking negative rigging (snatching trunkwood from an anchor below the piece being cut) then shockload is significant, and for this an Arborist Block is recommended over a Pulley. As for biners, it's a trade off. Auto is quick & easy to work with but can get banged up. Screwgate, slower & clumsy, harder to operate at the extremities of your reach, but more durable to impacts. | |
