Default Avoiding tears when cutting big pieces.

Did a monster oak today and when i cut off a big bit it tore like 5 meters down. Wasnt lanyarded in to that piece luckily....

After that i scarfed every piece on the sides before finishing with back cut, that worked well.

Never had problem with tears on smaller pieces.. is it normal too tear when its bigger? or are there other factors?

Always willing to learn more!!

Always cut through etc, even bark can act like rope and tear down.

Wing cuts can be a life saver both on the ground and in the air.

Wing cut (what I've always know it as) A horizontal cut through the bark & sapwood directly below both sides of the hinge the length of the hinge and a couple of inches either side. Care taken not to cut to deep thus compromising the holding wood and hinge on one or both sides, particularly on damaged trees.

See pics of some stumps of burnt trees I removed the other week. You can see the tear away is to the cut only.

Cheers

Tony

Be careful brother.

At least now you're aware and can try to prevent it from happening next time.
