Default Tree Clearing in Vic

So my scout group in wants to clear, from initial estimations at least 50+ trees across its property in Kilmore. Trees ranging from young to mature, I would say they have their eyes on some trees which have a DBH of 1.5m+. It's been a while since I did Conservation & Land Management so Im a bit iffy on rules, are there any rules against this? Do they need to get a permit before cutting down so many trees and do they need to be offset?

Some of my acquaintances in Queensland in this situation would be waiting behind a locked gate with the trusty Stihl running! ;-)

Speaking of 'offsets', perhaps someone could define for me the term 'tree'. If you had 10 trees to cut down and the 'gubbermit' demanded 10 offsets, could you buy 10 bonsai? ;-)

Found out you need a planning permit for this sort of thing.

There would be set species to buy to offset the trees, you can't cut down 10 100 year old Euc's and replace them with 10 bonsai trees. You would be replacing them with more like 30+ similar Euc's and be required to maintain them over 10 years, if any die you are required to replace them.

Nope tis not that easy as the gumnuts have naturally made it over complex.

Thats about it but I'd say 10 - 100 year old eucs in high veg land class EVC could cost ya about $45 thousand even more.
The concept to protect native veg is valid but the mechanism is insanely complex with many users and managers arguing the definition and outcomes, so add costs here. The result after 10 years is nil or very little worthy veg has been saved at all and much of the replanting offsets are just crap over priced and rarely checked.

Have a look at this and see how complex, even a facilitator makes it. 22 information sheets you'll need a thesis study year to absorb it all.

Derwoodii

Even though I am a 'city slicker' I like trees just as much as the next man. Even in my part of 'middle suburbia' I have a nice vista of trees.

Our state has 20% of its area as State and National Park, so why should the 'gubermit' stop a farmer from farming on his land? Perhaps what is needed is soe 'pr' campaign to educate certain recalcitrant farmers as to the value of trees on their farms, for all sorts of purposes? But if you had one 100 tree, slap, bang in the middle of your cropping paddock, wouldn't you want to remove it. There is nothing wrong with planting some more around the edges of the paddock, or elsewhere. Remember, in 100 years, everyone will have forgotten about the original tree, and the one you planted will be approaching senesence.
