Townsville has no real VPO's but they do require written permission to undertake tree work on Council trees, the for as you can see is somewhat shall we say brief TreeRemoval.pdf LL10M_Parks_Reserves.pdf The other LGA yes we have two for one place Thuringowa is less easy to track down but here it is on pg 8, there's no easily accessable form so you'd have to go to the council offices to fill in the permission docs, I know you will won't you SF |

But that's for street trees and park trees etc ... govt owned trees. Are you saying it's culture to just whack council trees? What about trees on private land?

We have no proper local law in place with enforcement officers to protect any vegetation on private land, we have a local law 52 that is supposed to achieve that but you read it and see if you can find the problems in it. Chapter%2052%20-%20Vegetation%20Management.pdf It just isnt worth the paper of electronic sparks its made of, there is no database there are no trees listed or recorded, there are no officers with the sole responsibility of policing this or anything like it. The hort officers we have bless them spend all their time dealing with ridiculous complaints from rate payers to keep the heat of sitting (and I mean sitting) members. From my work in the Gold Coast I know its just as bad there and GCCC have massess of paperwork and inforcement officers SF |

The way I read it it's an ass about VPO system. Nothing is protected unless it's nominated with a reason as to why and accepted by the council. This is the opposite to the preferred system which gives criteria for all vegetation (within certain parameters) to be protected. For instance, you'll see many VPO's which say "all vegetation exceeding 300mm in dia measured at 1.2m above ground level or exceeding 5m in height" is protectedunless such vegetation is within 3m of an approved building or specified as a significant landscape tree. How easy is that?
