Got a call from a homeowner that wanted 6 x 15' trees cut down. So I go out there, and lo, they are on the street outside the sidewalk. They are also about 18 inches BDH. The City of Portland, OR requires permits for cutting any street trees. Portland also requires permits for pruning street trees over 12 inches DBH. Portland also requires a permit for cutting down this size tree even if it inside the guy's personal property area. So I tell the guy this, and say I cannot give him a bid, and I cannot cut his trees. So he tries to talk me into doing it anyway... I say no, and by the way, the trees are 20-25 feet tall, not 15' as he claimed. Ohhhhh. They have been pollarded in the past, and look like crap. Utility company pruning. They looked like they were due for another utility line haircut. Maybe the Mexicans will do it for him without a permit? Not me. |

Would it be very difficult or costly to obtain the necessary permits? Personally I love trees but I do have a problem with governmental intrusion into doing tree work on private property. |

we have the same thing here where you must get permits to cut down your own trees at home, but in a way I do understand why as some people intend to just cut anything down when the tree could look awesome, years old, safe, and been there before they even move in the propertiy

We live in tree city where everything usede to get permitted. After the hurricanes the city had so many law suits that they backed way off. They still regulate all heritage trees ( large, long lived varieties) but allow most smaller trees to be cut or if they are with 5 ft of a building. So of the neighboring towns are following suit except that if you pay the 50.00 permit fee they will let you cut anything. Some regulation.. Our city has a replant aggreement and it you don't want to plant the trees on your property you can donate them to the city. They are still really strict on commercial properties. I against government intrusion also...
