Hi All, I didn't realise that you had to get council permission to cut or remove a tree from your own property. Since when did council get so much power? last nights gale winds took down our half dead front yard tree (we sus our neighbour for poisoning as he wouldn't stop asking us to cut it down because the leaves were messing up his yard - but that's another story). Thank god it didn't crash through the bedroom window and onto the children!! Now we have sawn the branches and stacked them by the bins and have the trunk to do something with. I was going to ask if there was a free service that collects felled trees, but if trees are an issue with just about all councils I doubt there would be a free service to take them away. Is there going to be an issue with council thanks to mother nature? Our council is Greater Dandenong Council. Cheers for your help. Jennifer |

Tree removal rules varies between councils. You should give the council a call as they may pick up green waste but seeing as they have fortnightly collections for it you might have to do a few weeks of filling that bin.

thats the plan, to bin all the waste over time, otherwise we will try take it to the local tip/recycle place with the ute. Can council give us a headache because the tree is no longer there? I had a friend who had a tree fall due to age and weather, this was 20 years ago. They removed it way back and recently council had a gripe about the tree stump accusing them of not getting a permit to remove and didn't believe it was removed so many years ago. I'm just worried its going to become ridiculous. Last edited by Arcane; 21st June 2011 at 05:28 PM. |

Hi Guys/Girls, Hey did you guys know that in the majority of regions and districts in New Zealand that you do not need any council permission to cut down trees that are on private land and over a thousand years old ....even 1500...or older , younger.ect ...its totally open slaughter and dont let anyone convince you otherwise. This country is so f'kn backward when it comes to protection of giant native trees on private land. I am the self proclaimed ambassador for trees - NZ . I submit , goad , prod and poke sticks at our councils that ommit to cover our Giant native tree assets in their respective council planning documents. I've even run for public office in local -body elections to develop policy surrounding such protection and asset management of iconic tree assets. NZ is not the clean green country that it makes out to the rest of the world it is... its a global disgrace in tree asset management. Im not saying that protective mechanisms dont exist but unless trees are offered up for protection they are not automatically protected...disgracefull!!!!. It is my lifes work and ambition to change this horrific situation... Have you ever heard anything quite so tragic? true though...! What are any ones thoughts? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If the link works agree to conditions type in your address follow the pages, its a bit clunky & bureaucratic but you can create a report that shows what controls are upon your land. In your case a storm felled tree is unlikely to attract much concern from the City. twas a wee windy last nite eh., | |

@derwoodii Windy alright! i thought the wind would take the roof off, instead it blew the tree down :S I will check out the link and also cold call the council to see what they say. I don't what to attract attention, council dramas are the last thing I need right now esp over a tree. EEP! |

Nahh, unlikely you'd ever need permit for that half dead wind victim reckon twas a Photina canna quite tell. Its left a nice patch for a new planting n this time of year bare rooted fruit trees are in at nursery's, consider replacing the site with a few apple pears apricots. Thoughts on permits for tree removal is discussed in the tree law section , many say yes many so no. Laws for veg control are a mish mash of federal state and then local gov. While they mean well protect the environment etc the implementation lacks some better sense. Last edited by derwoodii; 22nd June 2011 at 09:46 PM. Reason: ops |
