Default Palms and other Protected Plant Species, N.S.W. Australia

I have created this thread due to the strong anti-palm opinion through the forum threads.
It is intended to clarify that NOT ALL PALMS ARE EVIL ... in fact some are protected under N.S.W. DEC legislation, which has existed since 1974.
National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 No 80 - Schedule 13 Protected Native Plants

The two species of interest are Archontophoenix cunninghamaina - Bangalow Palm, and Livistona australis - Cabbage Palm.
All southern Sydney and South Coast Councils adhere protection to BOTH palm species.

NSW legislation website

Beware ...
To the untrained eye Livistona australis could be confused for Washingtonia sp.
Archontophoenix cunninghamiana is similar to A. alexandrae ... and again requires a trained eye to differentiate the two.
Also note Cordyline stricta is on the list.

I dont get that site or how that protection works.

Are they protected everywhere or just parks or councils or what?

My understanding this legislation was originally introduced to stop the removal of whole plants, and the stripping of foliage and flowers of native plants from natural areas (be it National Parks, State Parks, Crown Land or roadside reserves and creek side areas) for re-sale either in floriculture or as whole plants (It also includes collection of orchids and other epiphytes).

The point here is that many of the local councils have HIGH regard for these palm species ... particularly the remant ones near creeks, on the coastal and plains and the foothills where urban development is sneaking in.
If you build and there are remnant palms, you will be required to keep the palms .... at best you may be permitted to transplant ... but usually with a substantial bond attached ... and not until all other design avenues were exhausted.

The species mentioned are NOT EXEMPT SPECIES...and quite the opposite ... they are highly regarded endemic species. I doubt a permit would be granted for the removal of a healthy Livistona, and probably not a Bangalow either.

The thread was intended to give a balanced view on the value that is held of (some) palms...and an alert that there are "look-alike" palms which must be differentiated.

Well versed with ID of them here, but the protection doesn't extend to the normal urban block.

You cant or shouldn't be touching anything not on your land anyway customers! In the sense of, "oh, there's a palm in the creek down the back lets go whack it".

I'd rather a client have Alex's than Bangalows, but they do cross hybridise so you got a Banging Alex.

Both are relatively self cleaning, not too bad, and the Livistonea is way better than a Washy if you're into those fan palms.
