Default Nambour Qld| State Govt logs protected trees.

I've written before that although a council has tree protection laws that the state govt etc over rides it.

An example for me was when a state school had protected trees and the trees topped, however council could not enforce their regs!

Well this time in Nambour to many peoples shock the State Govt's DNR gave permit to log protected trees..... ahh the luxury of doing as you damn well like, stuff'm all!

Tree felling shocks Nambour residents

A section of ridge near Nambour has been left scarred and barren after tree fellers moved in, taking down large mature trees.

A resident near the Carruthers Road property alerted the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to ongoing “clear-felling” after witnessing the treeline along Towen Mountain being thinned out.

“We heard all these chainsaws going and went up to inspect what was going on,” the woman said.

“There was an area of about an acre (0.4 of a hectare) that had been clear-felled – it looked like a bomb had hit it.”

The woman was told by the council that the property had a council tree preservation order over it.

But she was shocked to learn yesterday from council that the land had been subject to a successful application to the Department of Natural Resources for a tree-harvesting permit.

“It seems that council tree preservation orders mean nothing – they can be overridden by the state government.”

A council spokesperson confirmed that the Gympie office of the DNR issued a permit over an area of some 14 hectares for tree farming purposes.
