| In The Baltimore Sun (ironic) is an article today requiring a neighbor to cut his trees down because they block his neighbor's solar collector. The trees were there first, but the court sides with the owner of the solar collector. Typical of California here in the US. In trees vs. solar power battle, redwoods lose a round in Calif. -- Environmental Issues, California -- baltimoresun.com The first "solar collectors" were trees! |

| Same here, solar has right of way. In England, they have the "Anti Social Behavioural Act - Trees" for people planting out boundaries removing sunlight. There is actual ways of calculating sunlight and they can come measure it. I suppose we all have a right to certain things and the neighbour doesn't have supremacy to remove that right with a tree. ![]() Quote:

| The California legislature did right by these folks and passed an amendment to the 1978 bill giving trees planted before the installation of solar collectors the "right of way" so to speak. http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_9005713 I hope these folks hadn't already cut their trees down. |

| There seems to be a greater issue here than the ability to generate a few KW of power. The trees do SO much more than cast shade. I hope the solar power geniuses remember that when their property is washed (flood waters) OR blown away in a dust storm, that THEY were responsible for the destruction of the trees. Wind power generation would be more suitable, IMO. Absolutley NO ONE wants to live where the winds are blowing, why not utilize these areas for power production. Hey, who knows, if the wind quits blowing, we could bus some of the blowhard politicians, lawyers and people who praise conservation, while driving gas guzzling 4X4 SUVs, out and they could blow on the blades of the wind generators. For those people who want to live in the FULL sunlight, MOVE TO THE DESERT, and leave the trees alone. |

| Gotta agree with you there, TD. If they want to make solar power, let them go to Egypt and Lebanon where they cut all of their trees down a few millennia ago. Then they brought in the sheep and goats to polish off the seedlings and most of the grass. Once you get rid of the trees, the desert just has a way of taking over. But it's perfect for solar power..... |

| And Wind! I am NOT a radical environmentalist, I prefer to call myself logical. I was watching a program on CBC Canada the other night (Please don't tell anyone) on the global climate. It seems that if your not being encroached upon by a desert, your likely being washed down stream by a mud slide. In the recent past the fires in SOCAL and (I think) Germany, wildfires destroyed not only the trees, but the understory also. One year later, when the rains came, the hills were being washed down the valleys. There is a delicate balance, and interference by mankind might make the world flat. The solar panel generating folks probably have their heads in the right place, by learning self-reliance. BUT I find it hard to believe that they can't find another spot in their yard to place the collector panel. We have had hundreds of calls to prune trees for satellite dishes. The most memorable one is a woman who told us she tried the dish everywhere. I looked around and saw that IF she would of had another 10' of wire, OR ran the existing coax a different route, she could make it work. NOPE, she had to have it working by that evening. I was instructed to cut down one of the nicest Green Ash trees I have ever seen. By the time the chainsaw was cool and the brush was chipped, she was back out in the yard to tell us it still didn't work. The trees that were on the south boundary of her property were a issue also. Thank goodness that they were within the limits of approach of the power line, I didn't have to help anymore in her attempt to deforest her yard. Since this incident, I have made it MY policy that I will NOT cut live trees for couch potatoes. This job really opened my eyes as to the way of things to come. She NOW doesn't have any valuable shade trees in her yard, her kids sit ALL the time watching TV, and the air conditioner runs 24/7. Yup, I helped in screwing up the next generation of leaders. NO MORE! |

| Trees first. If the trees are blocking yuor solar panel why not make a beefier version of the antenna tower and install the panel up there.I've seen some that are well over 100' tall.if more people used commonm sense like that we wouldn't have these issues.I also recomend to save money that people do thier own gardening.I haven't got much of a garden but think of the little bit of money i'll save.I still have to plant potatoes and corn.
