Ya, it happens sometimes. I just adjust to the wood that is left if I can.As far as cracks go, most all carvings in the round will crack (I promise they will crack to my customers), I like to judge where the crack will be and work on the opposite side, also a relief cut in the back of the carving will help direct the pressure relief away from the good stuff.
