Sounds like you got the right idea, i hate those 4wd guys that find a puddle n go back and forward thru it all day trying to get bogged and destroy the roads in our forests. Post some pics JayD!

The scoop is a roof vent. Gives some fresh air as all air con etc is removed. It also helps reduce dust into the car from underneath through all the seals etc by sort of pressurising the cabin.
I think the pole is a signpost
