Looks like a tent caterpiller to me they where so bad here a coulpe years ago that ya could hear there crap hit the ground when ya where in the woods(beer covers where recomended) they come and go here in cycles at about 10 years. They are also nasty and slippery while climbing. a couple of years ago when they where realy bad the train at the copper mine close to my house couldnt run on the tracks the wheels whould just slip on the worms as they travled down the tracks. They also "POP" when there are thousands of em on the road and they get run over ......as for killing trees i havent seen to many die, just get teribaly shooked and regrow small little leaves over the season. O ya birds wont eat em either they must taste bad. soapy water will kill em but if there are allot of them they will smell like dead fish after they are dead and rotten. when i find nests like that i usualy take the propain torch and fry em!
