Good info on lowering technique,but if you dont mind I'd like to add two more small things that are only small but important.

1/ Tie a stopper knot in the end of your lowering rope.
This will give you enough time to deal with what your lowering before you let the rope run thru your hands.

2/Rake the area where your rope is layed out so you can run it smothly.
This will save any twigs comeing up with the rope prematurely braking the load.
