Well, some just grow till they bust! Might be a case of leave trees to themselves like these were and watch what they do, self destruct.
And not just one limb but many, not just one tree but many.
Now this happened in the cooler mild winter here, days maybe 24C and not much wind.

Notice the darker cracks inside
Looking closer at those cracks and there's no bark in there, they're cracks that have discoloured due to a fungi in there, found some hyphae.
And another on different tree, ends have been cleaned up.
