Sure membership of organisations has its downfalls - I belong to the NZAA and the ISA - but it's a useful link for info and different ideas and opinions.

One key thing to note:

Professional membership is tax deductible (at least in NZ and I'm pretty sure in Oz and the USA too!). So if you'd rather give your money to the IRD / IRS, go for your life.

Personally, I'd rather be affiliated to an international society.

Another thing - the organisation is composed of us. So we're what makes it good, bad, or indifferent. Same holds for any association / church / club / whatever.
