Default removing suckers.

hi guys,

have some trees on a property, tallow wood, blood wood and others in the Euc. family. A number have a dominant trunk of approx 400-600 dbh, growing within a foot of the dominant trunk is a sucker (unsure of proper terminology). this sucker is of the same species, however greatly stunted and in most cases rubbing against the main stem.

my question is, can this sucker be cut to ground level? my concern though is that it is either part of the same tree or at the very least at this close proximity the roots will be grafted to main trunk's roots. removal may result in creating any entry point for nasties to enter the dominant trunk? or leave as is and let it continue rubbing and damaging.

any thoughts would be great ta!
