Default Dead White Pines

The snow is finally gone and I have been able to get out in my bush and look around. Most years I find one or two small dead white pines but this year there seems to be a lot more. There is no damage I can see just the whole tree is brown. Any thoughts? My other problem is also with the white pines. About half way up the tree (one to three feet tall) I seem to get a defect for lack of a better word. The top half of the tree then dies and later the whole tree. The "defect" looks like it may be bugs as there is a white film or gauze but not really a cocoon. I am reluctant now to plant any more white pines this year.
