No, they are used in conjunction with gaffs, hand gaffs so to speak. My first tree was with Lineman's spikes and it was scary. I bought some Bashlin Aluminum gaffs with tree spikes and it's much better. Way more comfortable with Buckingham velcro wraps. I've got great gaffs.
The easier part is bypassing limbs and forks, instead of unclipping and clipping up over them again with the climbing strap.
