How big/size. What situation (garden or property, feature tree, screen ???)
My bro who lives at Tumut planted a in a Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree) probably about 8 years ago ... suits <-10oC. Probably will grow to about 30m (max) tall, with a conical crown not much more than 5-6m across, with a single trunk.
This is the tree ... pic taken in November in flower.
With the granitic soil, dig in plenty of compost dug about 6 months before planting. Personally, I would'nt plant straight in unconditioned /unimproved granite soil.
OR maybe the Chinese Pistachio (Pistacia chinensis ) ...it is much smaller growing (max 15m).
It doesnt seem to mind granite soils either ... has lovely autumn red colour ... and attractive berries ... I have seen good performance at Adelong where the soils are really grainy ... and its pretty cold there too (sleet/snow in cold winters). See link for images

Or go nuts with the cold loving species like Zelkova serrata or Fagus sylvatica.
