Think it's acceptable to use one hand when arm is at full reach and any kickback that may occur would be away from you. Would encourage beginners to use both hands on saw at all times, not only for safety but to improve work positioning. More you work with two hands on saw the faster and more competent you'll get. Only when full awareness and understanding of the saws behaviour, work positioning, individual wood types and potential hazards is reached, then i think it's upto the individual.
