Well, one thing it does is make for a more durable card. The big, open-pore species like oak have tendency to crack. So does the teak.
The dry-film I got, I think, was by accident. It was on the backside of some curly maple I ordered. As thin as the film is, it adds just a bit more heft, and helps prevent the cards from cracking. Great stuff!
Tara, I really need to order cards, ASAP. I have completely run out and things are looking grim here.......
