I have experienced this with an old Rayco. I think it was metal tarnish from a reaction of the metal to sweat. And boy did that Rayco make you sweat. My personal favorite for removing the tarnish, pinyon sap, tannin, etc. from my hands is Comet and a nylon brush. If that doesn't work, I'd just say wear it and be proud!
