In this case I used Plants of the Sydney Region (Alan Fairley/Phillip Moore)
I also looked at Field Guide to Eucalypts by Brooker & Kleinig, which is supposed to be the Bible, and was disappointed at the lack of info within. ssp mannifera and ssp maculosa are treated as one, without reference to the different sized fruits, and ssp gullickii is mentioned only as having different juvenile leaves, not different shaped fruit.
