That's a well written story.
It's easily forgotten that it's only the outside that is alive and the inside can be rotten/decayed/termite hollowed etc. That limb that broke had patches of live cambium, enough to keep things green and alive looking, but inside it was crud.
It was an ambitious tie in, don't know why he didn't go for one closer to the trunk etc.
Lower branches can be more susceptible to problems due to shading from upper branches, it's also the lower branches that naturally shed. |
