Sean, there are also studies with positive results (see the Tienanmen Square work), but as you say it is site and tree dependent; many variables. Yes the air tool does mess up small roots--the size that the tree can regrow quickly. Drills go through roots big and small, and glaze the sides of the holes, greatly reducing permeability in some soils.
