I aint deleting this thread, it's a good one.

I've been thinking about alternate structures to trees actually and pretty much I can say they dont provide (for surface area or volume) the benefits trees do.

Sure, you can erect shade sails, but they wont transpire and cool the air in the vicinity and add to rainfall when enmass like forests do.

Oh, they wont filter pollution or air either.

Nor will the man made shade structures yield anything edible or consumable (from furniture to firewood).

Nor will they keep ground water down lowering soil salinity.

Nor will they reduce surface run off and erosion.

Oh well, that's just a few off the top of my head but it's hard to replace trees with a man made alternative that's as good.

A key ingredient is public parks and street trees, as the urban block gets smaller and subdivisions denser there has to be good town planning to make sure there's green space.
