No, you guys are missing the boat. This is a method of blocking down palms where the tension clamps your bar and you get stuck in the tree.
By boring thru and leaving the sides the section cannot compress your bar. Then by cutting in the wing (no more than a bar width) again the section wont clamp the bar and you can break it off.
Otherwise you can end up having to perform this operation.
