Someone who I do a bit of work for wants to put a nice shade tree or two in their yard in front of their house, but want something that's root system won't tear up his lawn and patio.

Considering that the tree was planted a propper distance from such things as that and the house, what are good varieties to choose from? The location is Los Angeles County of Southern California, but if someone can point me in the direction of some good species to check on then that'd be helpfull.
