Default Treating hack damage

A business aquaintance asked me to come look at one of his elms. Apparently it was pruned with spikes a couple years ago, he didn't know that wasn't propper, so didn't stop the guy.

From what he says, the thing has quite a bit of puncture damage from the spurs. I'd like to know if there's some way to treat this, and / or what can be done for the tree on a nutrient level to help it out, if that is possible. He said it's about 32" dia at the base.
