The Spotted Gums are well known along the east coast of Australia, from Qld to Vic to abt.400m altitude, and in varying soils types.
In the Shoalhaven in particular, they occur naturally in almost mono-specific stands and grow to very tall trees.
In the Wollongong region they are almost absent, excepting for two defined, but remotely located pockets, at Coniston and Corrimal (although there are planted specimens dotted throughout the region). Here they only grow to ~20m tall.
The spotted trunks are unmistakeable, but not dissimilar to Angophora costata in some respects.
Attached photo west of Nowra (Shoalhaven River area). I know this area was fired 6 years ago...so there is extraordinary sapling regrowth occurring (mostly spotted gum). The tree at centre, with patchy orange bark is E.punctata...and the few Allocasuarina are A.littoralis. The tree with dark bark is Corymbia gummifera.
I had to undertake a bushfire resolution for this site.............

Made sure all the E.puntctata's were retained .....because it is habitat for sugar gliders (the ideal max. glide distance is ~30m).
